Hudson Valley Garlic Festival

|
 |
Each year, we try to bring you the best in garlic lectures from experts
in growing, braiding, storing and otherwise handling Allium sativa.
During festival hours, you can almost always find our friends from
the Garlic Seed Foundation over at their tent, demonstrating how best
to braid garlic. As well, we have a planned set of demonstrations
by garlic experts who provide their own special insights.
Here is the 2008
lecture and entertainment schedule, click 2008 festival schedule.
Here is some useful biographical info about our 2008 lecturers:
- Bob Dunkel is the editor of ''The Garlic Press'', the official
publication of the Garlic Seed Foundation(www.garlicseedfoundation.info/).
Bob has been growing and testing out varieties of garlic for over 26
years. He is devoted to garlic growing, without the use of chemical
or artificial supplements. He and his Garlic Seed Foundation colleagues
have been with the festival since its first year at Cantine Field.
- Noah Gress is one of the
blessed people who produces
very tasty and healthy
food as an organic "market
gardener", which means he is
somewhere between a gardener
and a farmer. Noah grows and sells his crops
in Southeast Pennsylvania and was one of the original
growers for the field research on garlic varieties.
As part of this project, Noah consistently grew some
of the best garlic from any site in the U.S. Noah will
be lecturing on the topic "All about Garlic" at 1:30 p.m.
on Saturday and at 10 a.m. on Sunday, at the Chef &
Garlic Lecture tent. During other times of the festival,
you can look for Noah at or nearby the Garlic
Seed Foundation tent.
- Ted Maczka is known as the "Johnny Appleseed of Garlic"
as he gives away free garlic seed all over the United States. His
Canadian farm is an experimental station for the testing of cold-hardy
strains of garlic and he will talk about his revolutionary new way
of growing garlic.
- David Stern, has farmed
small fruits and vegetables
at Rose Valley Farm for 35
years. His certified organic
farm is between Lake Ontario
and the Finger Lakes in
Upstate New York. He has produced garlic for over
30 years and was a co-founder of the Garlic Seed
Foundation in 1984. He has been the Director of the
Foundation since its inception, and is a Board member
of its parent organization, Friends of Garlic, Inc.
For many years, he has researched, written about,
lectured about, and eaten a lot of garlic. David will
be lecturing on the topic of "Secrets of Growing Great
Garlic", at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday and at noon on Sunday.
During other times of the festival, you can look
for David at or nearby the Garlic Seed Foundation
tent.
- Betsy Williams has been in the business of growing, selling,
decorating and teaching about living with herbs since 1970. Trained
as a florist in Boston and England, she combines her floral skills
with an extensive knowledge of history, plantlore and seasonal celebrations
to create uniquely beautiful fresh and dried floral arrangements
for weddings and private homes.
Mrs. Thrift, Betsy's almost real, imaginary friend makes herb
vinegars, mustards and butters every fall. Then she cooks with them!
At this year's festival, Betsy demonstrates the basic techniques for making herb vinegars,
mustards and butters and then shares ways to use them for delicious,
quickly-made family meals.
Taste herb vinegar, herbed mustard and herb butter, then sip one of
Mrs.Thrifts' favorite soups--all flavored with garlic of course!
- Bob Yerina is the owner of
Garlic Delite Farms in Little
Falls, NY. He has been participating
in the Hudson Valley
Garlic Festivals since their
start in 1992. He has been
growing garlic for many years and is a renowned
expert in the special braiding technique required
for hard-neck garlic. Bob will give his insightful lectures
on braiding and growing garlic, and will hold
his useful question-and answer sessions in the Chef
& Garlic Lecture Tent, at 4:30 p.m on Saturday and at
11:15 a.m. and 4:15 p.m. on Sunday. At other times, you
can find Bob in his booth, most likely braiding away.
